Back in college, Greg Golden got a laugh out of his girlfriend by suggesting they should sell pretzels shaped like mustaches.

Five years later, he quit his job as a forensic accountant to open his dream food truck, with his girlfriend-turned-wife by his side.

But things didn’t go quite as smoothly as planned.

Only one week after Greg decided to pursue his entrepreneurial passion full-time, his beloved food truck broke down after a long event. A new engine and transmission cost the business everything they had – leaving them with only $0.57 in their bank account. But Greg and the Mustache Pretzels crew were committed to keeping the company open, rebuilding the company from scratch into the successful business it is today.

Today, the business is prospering and providing jobs in the local community and giving back to local organizations through product donations and volunteering.

Mustache Pretzels is one of 102 small businesses across 49 states and the District of Columbia recognized as winners in the 2017 American Small Business Championship (ASBC) hosted by SCORE, a nonprofit association dedicated to helping small businesses achieve their goals through training and mentorship. For the fourth year in a row, Sam’s Club is sponsoring the ABSC to help small business owners get the tools and skills they need to be successful.

There is no cookie cutter formula to the makings of an American Small Business Champion. This year’s competition brought in a record number of more than 1,500 applications, representing the diversity and wide range of industries of the nation’s small businesses.

Winners like Mustache Pretzels received a $1,000 Sam’s Club gift card in addition to training and networking opportunities. Of the 102 winners, three lucky small businesses will be named Grand Champions and receive a grand prize of $25,000 to be awarded this fall.

This week the 102 winners attended trainings in Dallas to learn from SCORE experts. In celebration of National Small Business Week you will read key takeaways these small business owners learned in Dallas right here on the Sam’s Club Blog. Check back with us next week to learn more!
