Member Scott Havice is a high school biology teacher by day and a hot dog connoisseur by dinner.

“Sam’s Club Café is his favorite place to eat. He loves the hot dogs… He just thinks they’re the best thing ever… Whenever we go, he’ll get an extra one or two just to bring home and have a couple days later. They reheat really nice.”

Sam’s Club member Kelly Havice wanted to surprise Scott, her husband of 23 years, with a 50th birthday party he would never forget. He’s not into fancy restaurants or expensive meals. Frankly, his favorite meal is a frank.

“Once a month, we go out on a date. It’s usually a nicer restaurant because that’s what I enjoy. One time I decided to make it more about him, so we went to see a movie and went to Sam’s Club for a hot dog and a pretzel. I brought candles to put on the table. He thought that was the best date night ever.”

While trying to plan his party, Kelly had a stroke of genius. Why not invite family and friends to Sam’s Club for Scott’s surprise?

Surely he’d appreciate a pile of beloved hot dogs from Sam’s Club for his 50th. That’s when Kelly headed to Club 4962 in Sandusky, Ohio, and talked to Fresh Assistant Manager Desiree Collazo.

“Can you imagine my face when she asked me if she could have it here? She said, ‘I have an off-the-wall question for you.’ I’m thinking I’ve heard it all. I’ve been with the company for 15 years. She said, ‘My husband turns 50 years old and he loves your hot dogs from the café,’ and I start smiling... ‘So I was wondering if I could have his surprise birthday party here.’ I looked at her and said, ‘Okay, that’s a first. That’s definitely a first.’”

“She was wonderful. I think she only thought I was crazy for half a minute,” said Kelly.

Once the green light was given by Club Manager Ronald Manner, Kelly went into planning mode.

“I brought in balloons and some tablecloths and I got a cake from Sam’s Club. It was really good, by the way, one of those two-tier cakes… We ended up getting 18 hot dogs, 7 or 8 pretzels, two pizzas and drinks for everybody… I can’t say enough about the staff. They were just so helpful and so nice and it was just wonderful.”

Once everything was set up and ready to go, a friend convinced Scott to take a trip to Sam’s Club. Little did he know, he was about to walk into his own surprise 50th birthday party.

“I just started laughing because I never would’ve guessed it in a million years. There was my family and a bunch of my close friends sitting there. It was quite a treat because I do like myself a hot dog… I have to give credit to my wife for thinking of something so clever. I never would’ve imagined it… We had several people that are not Sam’s members that came to the party that really loved the hot dogs and loved how well we were treated and I think they’re considering joining now,” said Scott.

“I never had met him until that day and he was amazing. I just fell in love with the whole family… I told Kelly, ‘I don’t know how you’re going to top this when he turns 60,’” said Desiree.

There is one final fun fact you should know about Scott. What does he put on his hot dogs? Is he a mustard and ketchup kind of guy? Does he relish in some relish? Nope. He eats all of his hot dogs completely plain. Yes, you read that right. Not a single condiment covers his hot dog.

“I feel that the hot dog stands alone. Why would I want to put anything on it to take away from that? There will never be anything on that hot dog… If it can’t stand alone, then it shouldn’t exist.”

Scott is quite the hot dog connoisseur. He’s also now an honorary member of the Sam’s Club Café team, and the next few date nights at the café are on us.
