From fires to floods, and now Hurricane Ida, we believe in supporting the communities we call home. We are incredibly proud of our associates on the ground aiding those impacted by the hurricane. Together, Walmart, Sam’s Club and the Walmart Foundation are committing up to $10 million to support Hurricane Ida and other natural disaster response and recovery efforts.

We’ll continue to update this page with more information as it becomes available.

Sept. 10, 2021

From our associates to our customers and nonprofit partners, we have many to thank for helping us respond to the impacts of Hurricane Ida, which has spanned several days and many miles. Recovery efforts continue, and we’re there to provide resources to our associates and our communities.

With extended power outages in many areas hit by the hurricane, fresh food and water have been a critical need for communities. A key part of our response has been ensuring our associates and communities have the resources they need. In total, to date we have donated 34 truckloads of water and food, some of which our associates helped distribute in our parking lots in partnership with local nonprofits.

Other resources have been available in our parking lots, including the Walmart Mobile Pharmacy to help bring needed medications to communities without access, Duracell PowerForward charging stations to provide an opportunity to charge devices, and two of P&G’s Loads of Hope laundry stations so people could clean their clothes and linens. We’re thankful that our suppliers have also responded in various ways.

Our distribution centers were also involved in the response effort. We donated more than 40 truckloads of produce, deli and meat from DC 6057 in Robert, Louisiana to Feeding America food banks in the surrounding area. They in turn are working hard to ensure the food gets to communities in need, including a community food distribution event in New Orleans.

Forklift with Hurrican Relief Supplies

In addition to this support, part of the initial $5 million commitment from Walmart, Sam’s Club and the Walmart Foundation has gone toward supporting local nonprofits that are providing hot meals, emergency relief and help with clean-up efforts. Some of these organizations include:

  • The Salvation Army – Providing food supplies and meals to those impacted by the hurricane as part of one of its largest disaster relief operations in several years.
  • Operation BBQ Relief – Serving hot meals to first responders, volunteers and those impacted by the hurricane. The Walmart Foundation’s support is helping provide approximately 62,000 meals.
  • Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank – Hosting large-scale drive-through food distributions to reach those without access to electricity and providing emergency food boxes of shelf-stable items and fresh produce.
  • United Houma Nation – Supporting the United Houma Nation community impacted by Hurricane Ida with focus on food and resources for Terrebonne, Lafourche and Jefferson Parishes.
  • Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana – Responding to immediate needs of both urban and rural areas impacted by the hurricane by providing food, water and supplies.
  • Foundation for Louisiana – A Black-led, social justice philanthropic intermediary implementing its disaster recovery framework first established following Hurricane Katrina by providing access to funding for grassroots organizations helping marginalized communities.
  • St. Bernard Project – Connecting communities to supplies and resources for recovery and regranting funding through its SHARE Fund and Disaster Corps to support community partners in immediate relief efforts, including debris removal and clean-up.

We’re grateful for the leadership and tireless efforts of these organizations as they ensure that communities have what they need to respond and recover. We’re continuing to look at how we can work together with community organizations to bolster our response.

In addition, thanks to the generous support of our customers, together, we donated nearly $10 million to the American Red Cross through a match campaign at our stores and clubs to help communities impacted by natural disasters in 2021. The funds raised from this campaign will go toward relief efforts due to the extensive flooding in the Northeast, as well as those impacted by other hurricanes, floods and fires this year.

This relief effort is long from over. But we’re here, along with our associates, customers and members, to make sure our communities have what they need to recover.

Sept. 8, 2021

Walmart, Sam’s Club and our associates continue supporting the people impacted by Hurricane Ida, as our network of stores and clubs serve as hubs for members of the community to get the things they need.

We worked to set up stations at stores and clubs so associates and community members could access essential services like food and water, charging stations and even a way to clean their clothes.

Victoria Steele is a sales associate at Store 542 in Houma, Louisiana, who said Walmart serves as a community hub not just for essential needs, but a bit of hope, too.

"It's a responsibility to be working together. It's a responsibility that we all come together, as a people in the community, for our customers to be able to get what they need and what they need for their family members," Steele said.

They need to still feel like they have hope in our community and that’s what they are receiving today.

Elsewhere in Louisiana, our associates continued to demonstrate their incredible commitment to helping people heal.

The Walmart Mobile Pharmacy, known affectionately as Big Blue, was on site at Store 502 in Galliano, Louisiana, ensuring that people had access to basic medications and other related essentials.

We’ll continue to monitor the situation as we help our associates, customers and members work toward recovery.

Across Louisiana, Walmart and Sam's Club associates gave back to communities. Our Walmart drivers delivered, in more ways than one, dropping off water and cooking hot food for those in need.

Stores also served as community hubs, with the Louisiana National Guard handing out ice at Walmart Store 4129 in Ponchatoula, Louisiana, and people from around the community getting gas at Sam's Club 4775 in Metairie, Louisiana.

And in impacted communities around the state, stores and clubs opened their doors to offer access to essentials. Community members and associates alike can now access food and water, as well as our pharmacy trailer, charging stations and places to do laundry. We encourage not only Walmart and Sam’s Club associates, but those who live in impacted communities, to share this information with anyone they think needs help. As our associates, customers and members continue to feel the impact of Hurricane Ida – and several other natural disasters across the country – Walmart and Sam's Club are launching a campaign to support the American Red Cross at registers and self-checkout stations in Walmart stores and Sam’s Clubs nationwide. Between Sept. 2-8, we’ll match customer donations dollar-for-dollar up to $5 million or until the campaign ends, for a total contribution of up to $10 million.

The register campaign will let customers and members make easy donations when checking out. All funds collected will go to the American Red Cross to support communities impacted by hurricanes, floods and fires in 2021.

Walmart and Sam's Club Relief Efforts for Hurricane Ida

This money is in addition to the $5 million commitment Walmart, Sam’s Club and the Walmart Foundation have already made to support relief and recovery for Hurricane Ida. Because of the recovery efforts already undertaken in impacted areas, we're close to returning to our full operating capacity.

In places hit by natural disasters, the soul of our stores and clubs continues to be our associates, customers and members, who support one another in holding up their communities. But don’t just take our word for it. They’ll tell you themselves:
